NH Auto Insurance | Steps to Take After an Accident

January 1, 2023

Nobody expects to be involved in a car accident. However, they’re called accidents for a reason, and the best way to prepare yourself is to understand what to do if the situation occurs. At Brownell Insurance NH, auto insurance is our specialty (among other things, of course). However, we believe in going above and beyond for our clients. We not only provide the most comprehensive and competitive auto coverage but also take the time to ensure you know how to handle an accident from start to finish.

Here’s what you should do if you are involved in a vehicle accident.

Remember that safety is first.

When an accident happens, things can seem unreal and move quickly. However, the first thing you need to remember is that you and everyone in your vehicle need to remain safe. Check if you or your passengers are injured and call 911 for medical assistance if necessary.

You should only exit your car if it is safe to do so and you are not in danger of any passing traffic. Find a safe spot on the side of the road to stand, away from any oncoming traffic. If it hasn’t been done already, notify the police that there has been an accident and provide your location as accurately as you can. If the accident has rendered your car undrivable, emergency personnel will help you contact roadside assistance. This service may be covered by your insurance, depending on your policy.

Gathering information is important.

After a car accident, there is a lot of information you need to gather, and it can be hard to remember everything. You may find it helpful to save this list to your phone or keep it handy in your wallet or glove compartment.

  • The names and phone numbers of the other drivers and any witnesses
  • The other drivers’ insurance companies and policy numbers
  • Their driver’s license numbers
  • The make, model, and year of their vehicles
  • Their license plate numbers

When documenting damage, take photos and videos of all vehicles involved, not just yours. If there are skid marks on the road or any damage to nearby property as a result of the accident, get pictures and video of that as well. Document the names of the police officers at the scene and the department they work for. Finally, make sure that you get a copy of the police report.
